Christmas Message

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As we await the coming of Jesus and celebrate the Birth of our Savior, we consider the abundant goodness that God has revealed to us. We, the people of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston have much for which to be thankful, especially in and through our young people.

Only a few weeks ago our diocese hosted the National Catholic Youth Conference. Over twenty thousand young people from throughout the United States gathered at the Reliant Stadium for a weekend to experience and witness to their Catholic Faith.

The powerful impression that many took from this conference was that our young people have much to contribute and desire to actively participate in our Church. They are not only the future of our Church but rather they are already important members of the Body of Christ. Their role in our Church is necessary today as well as tomorrow. These young people offer us many gifts, some of which are vitality, enthusiasm, inquisitiveness, sincerity, and service.

The energy during the days of the National Catholic Youth Conference should be a clear sign that our youth love Christ and his Church. This can only be the action of the Spirit. As older Catholics, we must encourage and direct our young people to continue to listen to the invitation of Christ, “Come, follow me.”

May this New Year be filled with continued blessings for all of us!

Mis queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Al esperar la venida de Jesús y celebrar el Nacimiento de nuestro Salvador consideramos las bondades abundantes que Dios nos ha revelado. Nosotros, el pueblo de la Diócesis de Galveston-Houston tenemos mucho de qué estar agradecidos, especialmente con nuestros jóvenes y por medio de ellos.

Hace apenas unas semanas nuestra diócesis fue anfitriona de la Conferencia Católica Nacional de la Juventud. Más de veinte mil jóvenes de todos los Estados Unidos se reunieron un fin de semana en el Estadio Reliant para vivir y dar testimonio de su fé católica.

La fuerte impresión que muchos se llevaron de esta conferencia fue que nuestros jóvenes tienen mucho con que contribuir y el deseo de participar activamente en nuestra Iglesia. Ellos no son el futuro de nuestra Iglesia, sino que más bien ya son miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo. Su funcion en nuestra Iglesia es necesaria hoy y no solo en el mañana. Estos jóvenes nos ofrecen muchos dones, algunos de los cuales son su vitalidad, su entusiasmo, su inquisitividad, su sinceridad y servicio.

La energía durante los días de la Conferencia Católica Nacional de la Juventud debe ser un signo claro de que nuestros jóvenes aman a Cristo y a su Iglesia. Esto sólo puede ser la acción del Espíritu. Como católicos adultos, debemos animar y dirigir a nuestros jóvenes para que continúen escuchando la invitación de Cristo, “Ven, sigueme”.

Que este Nuevo Año sea uno lleno de contínuas bendiciones para todos nosotros!
