Archdiocesan
policy and its implementation directs that every child fromgrades
K-12 in parishes and Catholic schools receive a systematic formation in
human sexuality. This formation will clarify
one’s personal values & beliefs about sexuality in light of
the official Catholic vision/teachings for human sexuality.
Catechist
formation includes a basic 12-hour content course in human sexuality
catechesis. The course provides a Scriptural & Christian anthropological
foundation for Church teachings with an introduction to teaching
methods, approved resources, and how to create parent partnerships.
It will develop 1) critical thinking skills with media messages, 2)
basic catechetical skills with parents & youth, and 3) assertiveness
skills to address peer pressure. Additional 3-hour
mini-courses are offered to those catechists seeking additional
formation in working with parents and teens. Family program models are
also available.
Catechists in
formal ministry of catechesis in sexuality must complete all
requirements for this course prior to teaching. This may include
persons in pastoral, family, or youth ministry.- Archdiocesan
