Resurrection
Window Installed
Milestone Reached in Cathedral
Construction
(HOUSTON) Motorists traveling on I-45 through
the south part of downtown will notice a construction milestone at
the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. A 40 foot stained glass
window depicting the resurrected Christ over the city of Houston was
installed June 12, 2007.
The Resurrection Window was created by
Mellini Art Glass and Mosaics of Florence, Italy and shipped by boat
to Houston. Glass artisans from Mellini were on hand to assist with
the installation. Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Fiorenza is overseeing
the cathedral project for current Chief Shepherd Archbishop Daniel
DiNardo. Upon
seeing the window in the new co-cathedral, Archbishop Fiorenza said,
“This beautiful artwork surpasses all my expectations and is much
more spiritually inspiring than any of the models we saw. We hope
that when people see this magnificent Resurrection Window they will
be reminded of Christ’s love for all people and His desire that we
bring His love and teaching of the Gospels to everyone.”
Besides the Resurrection Window, two 12 feet
tall marble statues were also delivered to the cathedral June 12th.
The statues each weigh 12,000 pounds and are made of white Carrara
marble and were created in Carrara, Italy. The statues, one
depicting Mary of the Immaculate Conception and the other of the
Sacred Heart of Jesus, will be mounted inside the co-cathedral
between June 13th and the 16th.
Work on the exterior of the new co-cathedral
is complete for the most part with the construction of the campanile
(bell tower) expected to be completed in October. The interior
stone work is schedule to begin June 18th. Projected completion of
construction for the entire co-cathedral project is expected in
early 2008 with a dedication Mass planned for April 2, 2008.
Ziegler-Cooper Architects designed the
structure located at the corner of St. Joseph Parkway and San
Jacinto in downtown Houston. Linbeck Construction is the
construction manager for the project. The new co-cathedral will
serve the 1.3 million Roman Catholics in the Archdiocese of
Galveston- Houston.
